My name is Meghan and I am the studio co-ordinator at RE-create Outreach Art Studio, a drop-in art studio program that is a partner of Art Forms, and runs out of their space three times a week! During RE-create youth can come in and make whatever kind of visual arts that they like, or participate in one of our ongoing studio projects. There’s always a pot of coffee on, some good tunes blasting on the computer and the happy hum of people working away on different projects.
It was fun learning how to wheatpaste together, and experimenting with string art in between the portraits. On the night of Art Crawl everyone who came in was encouraged to add the name of someone they loved to the strings, clipping on their names with clothespins. The end result looked great, and really celebrated the people who love and support our youth.
RE-create has recently partnered with the Hamilton Public Library to offer arts workshops in their “Living Room” space, which has been quite successful. Our button-making machine is always in high demand, and we’ve seen almost anything be turned into a button….even Ritz crackers!
The library gave us a box of discarded books that we’ve been cutting up and filling with art, or turning into sculptures. We’ll be showing off our final creations in a show in the 4th floor gallery space during the last 2 weeks of May. Hopefully we’ll continue to innovate with what can be made out of a book between then and now!
Keep updated on that, and other summer fun through our Facebook page. Or come and check out our studio times if you’re a youth between the ages of 16 and 24. We’re open on Mondays from 12:30-3:00pm, Tuesdays from 7:00-9:00pm, and Thursdays from 4:00-6:00pm. Can’t wait to meet you!
